Calvin Thomas

Mr. Calvin Eugene Thomas, age 71, of Griffin, in Pike County, passed away March 8, 2023.  Calvin grew up in Griffin, son of the late Glenn H. Thomas and Josephine Chambers Thomas.  He started working at an early age.  When he was 8, he had his own paper route in Griffin. After graduating high school, he worked at Hills Tire Store where he learned the tire business. He later joined the United States Army and served for two years.  He returned home from the military and worked at Pamona Products until they closed. Calvin then opened Thomas Tire Company in 1975, where he sold casings and recaps. In 1989, he moved his business from his property to its current location on Highway 19, where he offered a full line of tires. Calvin retired in 2019.

He enjoyed playing cards, visiting casinos, and traveling. He loved the tire business and all the people he met and talked to everyday, but most important to him was his family. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and a friend to many.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Glennett and Sandra.

He is survived by wife of 50 years: Pam Thomas; son: Todd Thomas (Dena); grandchildren: Hunter Thomas (Tindol), Hailey Thomas, Hannah Brooks and Hailey Tighe; great-granddaughter: Hartley Thomas; several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, March 10, at 2 p.m., in Mt. Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery in Griffin. Rev. Jim Hardie will officiate.
